Will Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe will be the next Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?

GOAT RACE

Erling Haaland plays down rivalry with Kylian Mbappe as football’s next Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – ‘I don’t compare myself’

Erling Haaland has dismissed the narrative that he and Kylian Mbappe will be the next Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Manchester City star will be playing his first game since the Premier League paused for the World Cup in a tasty Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool on Thursday – live on talkSPORT. But his name wasn’t forgotten during his absence at Qatar 2022.

That’s because of an emerging debate in football – whether Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain star Mbappe will be the next Ronaldo and Messi.

The latter stars have had a rivalry spanning more than 10 years since Ronaldo arrived in LaLiga and signed for Messi’s Barcelona rivals Real Madrid.

Now with those two stars entering the twilight years of their career, football fans have been looking for the next players to compete in the greatest of all time debate.

Following 22-year-old Haaland’s mind blowing start to life in the Premier League scoring a mammoth 23 goals in 18 games and 24-year-old Mbappe looking scarily good and winning the golden boot at the World Cup, fans believe they could be next GOAT rivalry.

But it turns out Haaland isn’t considering this to be the case.

“It’s impossible to say,” the Manchester City star told Viaplay.

“I don’t like to compare myself with others. I think you need to be your own player when it comes to that so I don’t like to compare or anything with that.”

Despite not believing in him and Mbappe being in a GOAT debate yet, Haaland hailed the effect that conversation had on Ronaldo and Messi’s careers.

Even beyond their time in LaLiga, the pair have continued to fight to be regarded as the best in the world – and Haaland sees this as a good thing.

“I think the media has been doing that with Ronaldo and Messi for the last 10 years and I think they’ve been pushing each other as well,” he continued.

“I think it’s been a positive thing. Barcelona and Madrid against each other.

“It’s been the perfect rivalry. But I don’t think about this [rivalry between him and Mbappe], honestly.”
