Callum Wilson misses England training session as ‘precaution’ with ‘minor strain’ ahead of World Cup quarter-final clash against France

Callum Wilson’s participation in England’s clash against France has been placed into doubt with the forward sitting out training on Monday.

The Newcastle forward has been used as a substitute in Qatar, coming on in two separate games, most notably providing an assist to Jack Grealish in the 6-2 win against Iran.

The team that started the 3-0 victory over Senegal were training inside, separate from the group that didn’t play or came on as substitutes, however, Wilson sat out training entirely.

England have said that he has suffered a minor strain and is only missing training as a precaution.

With the squad set for a rest day on Tuesday, he will have a chance to recover from the setback before preparations ramp up.

The quarter-final against France is on Saturday and England will be hoping to welcome back Raheem Sterling, who has travelled back home due to his family home being burgled. Ben White left the camp due to personal reasons.

Wilson’s contributions to England’s World Cup campaign has been limited but it’s drawn praise from former England striker Ian Wright.

“I saw him the other day and told him I admire his unselfishness,” Wright said.

“He comes on in the World Cup, team is 5-1 up. You’re running through. You can score yourself but you square it and give it to Jack Grealish. Callum actually said to me ‘Give and you shall receive’. I hope and pray that his time is coming.”

Wilson was selected as Harry Kane’s back-up forward, Southgate picking him ahead of the likes of Tammy Abraham and Ivan Toney.

The Newcastle forward has had a fine campaign in the Premier League, scoring six goals in 11 appearances.
