Belgium KNOCKED OUT of World Cup as Romelu Lukaku misses THREE glorious chances in draw with Croatia, including open goal
Belgium are out of the World Cup after playing out a goalless draw against Croatia in a match which saw Romelu Lukaku leave his shooting boots at home.
The Chelsea striker, who is on loan at Inter Milan, was brought on for the second half with the game goalless, and was so close to making an impact from the bench just before the hour.
However, the 29-year-old could not find the target as he missed an open goal from inside the area.
Yannick Carrasco raced through on goal but saw his effort blocked, with the ball falling into the path of Lukaku, who could only hit the inside of the post from just outside the six yard box.
He then headed the ball over the bar from just over six yards out, although the goal wouldn’t have stood as the ball ran out of play before Kevin De Bruyne crossed the ball in.
Lukaku then had two more huge chances as he could only deflect a firm cross from the right wide of the goal from inside the six yard box.
And then in the final moments of the match perhaps his best chance of the match came.
All he needed to do was get his head on a cross from the right but the striker inexplicably let the ball drop down to his knees and it was scrambled away by the Croatia defenders.
Belgium needed to score just one goal against Croatia to go through to the round of 16.
However, their lack of composure in front of goal coupled with Morocco’s 2-1 win against Canada means that they are now out of the World Cup.
It’s a sorry sight for Belgium, who are now approaching the end of their ‘golden generation’ without a title to their name.
Morocco have produced one of the shocks of the tournament having finished top of F, with Croatia behind them in second.
However, one of the big stories from the tournament will be the departure of Belgium before the knockout stages, considering how well they did last time out in 2018.
