Raheem Sterling left out of starting line-up for England against Senegal


Raheem Sterling is set to miss out on a place in England’s starting XI for their 2022 World Cup last-16 clash with Senegal.

Sterling, 27, has been among England’s top performers under Gareth Southgate but he is set to miss out on a place in England’s team for their first knockout match in Qatar.

Any impact the Chelsea forward will make will therefore have to be from the substitutes bench.

Sterling has made a total of 81 appearances for England, scoring 20 goals.

He also started England’s first two matches in Qatar, against Iran and the United States, before he dropped to the bench for the win over Wales.

And Southgate has elected to leave him on the bench once again for Saturday’s match against Senegal, as he continues to tinker with his front line.

Southgate warned ahead of the round of 16 match that England will not underestimate Senegal.

“We have been very impressed with Senegal,” he said.

“They are African champions and are very proud and have great spirit and belief in their team.

“They have some excellent individual players who can cause problems, but a good structure as well.”
