‘If I was Olivier Giroud, I’d be fuming’ – France record breaker cruelly denied spectacular overhead kick as referee contentiously blows for foul on Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny
Olivier Giroud was denied a superb overhead kick goal in France’s round of 16 clash with Poland.
The 35-year-old striker opened the scoring shortly before half time to become Les Bleus all-time leading goalscorer with 52 goals – and he could have made it 53 in the second half.
Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny punched away a high ball into the box from Antoine Griezmann but went down injured after falling awkwardly under defender Matty Cash.
Quick off the mark, Giroud reacted with a stunning overhead kick that ended up in the back of the net but with Szczesny down and out, the referee blew for a foul on the Juventus shot-stopper despite there being little contact prior to his fall.
Both Giroud and France coach Didier Deschamps appeared puzzled by the decision to award the foul whilst denying France a second goal.
Former England striker Lianne Sanderson was also mystified by the decision and felt the referee got the decision wrong.
Sanderson told talkSPORT: “If I was Giroud, I’d be absolutely fuming.
“That’s poor from the ref. It wasn’t a foul, Giroud put the ball in the back of the net and Szczesny collided with Cash and it wasn’t a head injury”
With France in the ascendancy, another goal for the holders should be enough to see them through to a quarter-final clash with the winner of England vs Senegal on Sunday evening,
