Jude Bellingham ‘is the one thing Liverpool are missing’ says Martin O’Neill, who wants to see the ‘phenomenal’ England World Cup star sign for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds

Former Republic of Ireland and Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill has told talkSPORT he would like to see the ‘phenomenal’ Jude Bellingham join Liverpool.

Bellingham has stunned audiences with his displays for England at the World Cup and the 19-year-old already looks like a world class talent.

It appears that Borussia Dortmund have polished yet another gem after signing the former Birmingham youngster in 2020, and they could be in for huge money this summer.

Among the runners and riders entering the race for Bellingham, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have been regularly linked, along with Real Madrid.

The Reds are crying out for midfield reinforcements, and O’Neill would like to see them land Bellingham for extra competition domestically and in Europe.

After talkSPORT host Simon Jordan said he’d like to see Bellingham pick Liverpool, O’Neill replied: “I don’t disagree.

“The one thing you felt that Liverpool were missing this particular season was a proper midfield player of that calibre.

“If you’re talking about the back end of last season, did I think Jude Bellingham was ready for that? Stepping into Liverpool and becoming a major player? I’m not so sure that I did, but his progress has been phenomenal.

“I’ve always cried out for a midfield player who can actually pick the ball up and actually travel with it ten, 15, 25 yards, in the meantime alluding some players, seeing the pass and then following it in.

“A goalscoring midfielder, but he’s more than that, he can drop back into positions again, his progress has been amazing in the last while.

“Selfishly I’d like him to play in the Premier League where I can see him week-in, week-out.”
