"He is not injured. He arrived overweight” 😳
Kalvin Phillips returned from the World Cup ‘overweight’, says Man City boss Pep Guardiola, who reveals England midfielder isn’t ‘in the right condition’ after Liverpool snub
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said Kalvin Phllips returned from the World Cup ‘overweight’ and isn’t in the right condition to play.
Phillips was left out of City’s squad for their 3-2 Carabao Cup win over Liverpool, despite having fresher legs than many of his teammates.
The 27-year-old had only featured four times for his club after an injury lay-off ahead of Qatar 2022, where he played twice for England as a substitute.
But despite his low workload in a relatively busy season, Phillips wasn’t up to scratch to face the Reds, as Guardiola revealed.
“He is not injured. He arrived overweight,” the Spaniard said when asked about the midfielders omission.
Asked why that was, Guardiola continued: “I don’t know.
“He didn’t arrive in the condition for the training sessions and to play.”
The City boss was then asked if he had expected Phillips to be fit, and replied: “Yeah absolutely, and that’s why he cannot play.
“When he’s ready he will play but we need him, we need him a lot.”
Pressed further, he added: “It’s a private conversation with Kalvin.”
Phillips joined City during the summer for £45million from boyhood club Leeds but had a slow start to his career at the Etihad as he recovered from shoulder surgery.
And next up for the Citizens is a trip to Leeds and Elland Road in the Premier League, as the reigning champions look to reel in leaders Arsenal.
