Gareth Southgate outlines strengths of ‘direct, organised’ Senegal and compares them to the USA ahead of England’s last-16 World Cup
England manager Gareth Southgate has told talkSPORT his side must ‘take their opportunities’ against Senegal.
The Three Lions boss also compared their last-16 opponents to fellow Group B side USA, as he listed out the kind of threat the Lions of Terenga offer.
England sealed qualification from the group stages with a 3-0 win over home nations rivals Wales, while Senegal beat Ecuador and hosts Qatar to advance from Group A.
The Three Lions’ boasted the best record of any other country from the first stage of the 2022 World Cup.
However Southgate isn’t seeing the clash against the West Africans as an easy task, as he explained the strengths they could punish his side with – even without Bayern Munich’s Sadio Mane.
Speaking to talkSPORT’s England correspondent Faye Carruthers on the eve of his side’s clash, Southgate said: “Well they’re direct.
“They not only counterattack quickly but when they’re in possession of the ball they look to play forward.
“They’ve got good forward players with speed and their midfield players are athletic and back the ball up really quickly.
“So the profile of the team is very clear and I think they’re very well organised defensively.”
Southgate also believes the 2022 AFCON winners possess similar qualities to fellow Round of 16 qualifiers USA, too, who held the Three Lions to a 0-0 draw in the second game of Group B.
And he thinks that ultimately, England will need to capitalise on the chances they get in the tie to avoid an upset, especially those from set pieces.
“They’ve also got good athletes, a bit like the USA were [able to] cover the spaces,” Southgate said.
“We’re going to have to use the ball very well and make sure when we do have the opportunities to progress that we take those opportunities as well.”
He continued: “Well set plays are always really important, we’ve not been as sufficient as we’d have liked on those in the tournament so far.”
England’s clash against Senegal is for 7pm on Sunday, which you can listen to live on talkSPORT.
