Edinson Cavani clearly doesn't like VAR #URU 🇺🇾 #FIFAWorldCup

Edinson Cavani branded a ‘horrible guy’ by Arsenal legend Ian Wright as Uruguay striker punches VAR monitor after World Cup exit turns ugly

Ian Wright blasted Edinson Cavani’s behaviour following Uruguay’s elimination from the World Cup, labelling the former Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United forward a ‘horrible guy’.

Uruguay crashed out of the World Cup in dramatic fashion despite their 2-0 win over Ghana as South Korea’s late winner against Portugal ensured they pipped them to qualification from the group based on goal difference.

There were unsavoury scenes as the Uruguayans were knocked out, with a number of players aggressively confronting the officials, while Cavani was seen punching over the VAR monitor.

The clash between Uruguay and Ghana was a feisty one, in the context of Luis Suarez denying the Africans a quarter-final place at the 2010 World Cup, and the South Americans took a two-goal lead and looked set to go through to the next round.

However, as they heard the news from the other game, they sent everyone forward in the hunt for a goal and even saw a late penalty call denied as Darwin Nunez fell in the box and Cavani were both denied.

After the game, Arsenal legend Wright and Chelsea icon Joe Cole, who were working on ITV’s broadcast of the game spoke about Cavani’s actions, and criticised his reaction at the final whistle.

“Wow, what a horrible guy!” Wright said before Cole added: “It’s terrible behaviour. You feel your frustration when you lose games of football, but you have to keep your composure because you have a responsibility.

Cole continued: “The world is watching, kids are watching. You can accept a little blow up, but four or five players are around the referee, it is not a good look.”

The match was probably Cavani’s last in a World Cup, and after a successful Uruguay career where he managed to reach the semi-finals in 2010 and quarter-finals in 2018, the group stage exit wasn’t a welcome one to wrap up his spell on football’s biggest stage.
