Declan Rice hails ‘standout’ Marcus Rashford and backs him to pip Kylian Mbappe to the Golden Boot after blistering start to the World Cup
Declan Rice sees no reason why England teammate Marcus Rashford can’t win the World Cup Golden Boot.
Rashford has made a blistering start to the World Cup, scoring three times during the group stage and he now has his sights firmly set on continuing his excellent goalscoring form in the knockout rounds.
The Manchester United forward has completed an incredible turnaround over the last year.
He had previously struggled for form and fitness which resulted in him losing his place in the England squad.
Fresh from his brace against Wales on Tuesday evening, Rashford is set to retain his place for the Round of 16 clash against Senegal on Sunday – live on talkSPORT – and Rice has paid tribute to the in-form forward.
“From the moment I came into the England set up I said Marcus is one of the stand out people I was so surprised by, ” said the West Ham midfielder.
“He‘s lightning quick, his speed, his eye for goal, the way he hits the ball – it’s really special, the technique he’s got on him.
“I know he had a tough year last year but no one ever doubted his quality and to now see him on the biggest stage doing it, it makes me really happy and it makes the team happy as well.”
The arrival of Erik ten Hag at Manchester United appears to have given Rashford a new lease of life.
The Dutchman immediately made a beeline for the 25-year-old and made clear his intention of keeping Rashford in the face of interest form Paris Saint-Germain during the summer.
Rashford’s drastically improved performances for United is testament to the faith shown in him by Ten Hag and the forward is now replicating his club form for the Three Lions.
His three goals in Qatar have shot his to the top of the scoring charts alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Cody Gakpo and Rice believes Rashford can come out on top as Harry Kane did in 2018.
He added: “There’s no reason he can’t. You see he had a big chance in the first half and if he keeps making them attacking runs behind the back line like he does for United he’s gonna keep getting the chances so it would be amazing for him to win the golden boot – I’d be delighted for him if he achieved that.
