‘When they come, I’ll think about it’ – Netherlands World Cup star Cody Gakpo opens door to Manchester United transfer and speaks about Leeds bid

Cody Gakpo has continued flirting with Manchester United by admitting he would consider joining the Premier League side.

The Netherlands forward has been a star at the 2022 World Cup, scoring in all three of their group games.

They are establishing themselves as a reach force in Qatar and face their toughest test yet in Argentina on Friday.

The PSV Eindhoven man was linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, before they eventually landed Antony from Ajax.

The 23-year-old has since gone on to be one of the most in-form players in Europe, scoring nine goals and adding 12 assists in just 14 Eredivisie games.

That form has translated to the World Cup, and probably added a few extra million to his price tag.

Gakpo spoke about that Man United interest and told Dutch newspaper NRC : “That was a tough period. I learned from that. I’m going to do it differently. What comes, that comes. Suppose you want to go from RKC (Waalwijk) to PSV, but that club is not coming. Then you can panic.

“I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I couldn’t remember. And I started to doubt. Leeds United did come. Should I go there? Now I wait everything. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. When they come, I’ll think about it. I also seek the help of God in these decisions.”

The forward also added: “As footballers, we are in the spotlight.

“People watch us. I feel it a duty to do something about it. I try to convey the lessons I learn from my church as best as possible to others who need it.”

The Netherlands face Argentina in Friday’s World Cup quarter-final with kick-off at 7pm and you can listen to the action live on talkSPORT.
