‘What on earth are you doing?’ – Chelsea outcast Hakim Ziyech capitalises on huge error from Milan Borjan as Morocco progress into World Cup last-16 as Group F winners as Dean Saunders rips into Canada goalkeeper

Chelsea outcast Hakim Ziyech was gifted a goal by Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan as Morocco sealed their place into the World Cup last-16 with a 2-1 win.

The north Africans only needed to avoid a defeat in their final group stage match to progress into the knockout stages for the first time since 1986.

But they instead claimed all three points after edging out a hard-fought match to top Group F.

In doing so they have become the first African country to top a group at a World Cup since Nigeria in 1998.

Morocco were handed a goal on a plate in the fourth minute following a calamitous gaffe from Red Star Belgrade shot-stopper Borjan.

He raced onto a poor back pass from centre-back Steven Vitoria, with the 35-year-old just needing to clear the danger and send the ball up the field.

But he bizarrely tried to dribble out from his area and his touch was well overhit, with the ball falling to forgotten Blues star Ziyech’s left foot 35 yards out from goal.

And the ex-Ajax playmaker simply chipped the onrushing goalkeeper to put the ball into an empty net as he made a difficult finish look easy.

talkSPORT’s Dean Saunders was left raging over Borjan on commentary, as he slammed the veteran for thinking he can play as an outfield player.

He said: “Deary, deary me what a mistake.

“Five minutes into the game, what on earth are you doing?”

Saunders added: “He’s got two options, option one, put your foot down the ball right down at the end of the pitch, option two, put your foot down the ball right down at the end of the pitch.

“And he’s chose another option that doesn’t exist, try and dribble past a midfield player.”

As for the strike, Saunders was quick to praise Ziyech, adding: “He’s executed it perfectly, that’s not a difficult finish, he’s shown his class. It was a gift.”

It went from bad to worse for Canada in the 23rd minute after Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri smashed the ball home at Borjan’s near post.

And Saunders yet again hit out at Borjan, as he remarked: “I have to say he’s done Borjan at the near post.

“If he gets done, he’s got to get done at the far post. I think he’s got to do better, but great ball and a great finish.”

Though Canada pulled a goal back in the 40th minute after West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd scored an own goal.

They dominated the second half at the Al Thumama Stadium and were unlucky not to come away with a draw.

Canada thought they had equalised in the 72nd minute but substitute Atiba Hutchinson hit the bar with a header from a corner.

Alistair Johnston then missed the rebound a yard out from goal as his effort kissed the top of the bar before going over.

The defeat means that Canada exit their first World Cup without a point as they now prepare for the 2026 edition.

As for Morocco, they will face the runners-up from the group consisting of Spain, Germany, Japan and Costa Rice.
