Netherlands dealt blow ahead of World Cup last-16 clash against USA after Manchester United target Jeremie Frimpong limps out of training in tears with ankle injury
Netherlands star Jeremie Frimpong limped out of training in tears with a suspected ankle injury ahead of Saturday’s Round of 16 tie against USA.
The Bayer Leverkusen right-back is yet to feature at the World Cup in Qatar having been an unused substitute in all three Group A matches.
And he is now a doubt to play this weekend in Netherlands‘ knockout clash after failing to complete Wednesday’s session.
A video shared by ESPN shows the 21-year-old in a heap on the floor as he held his right ankle.
The ex-Celtic defender appeared to be in tears as he covered his face with a bib while a member of the coaching staff looked at his knock.
Frimpong eventually was filmed leaving training early as he limped off the pitch, with medics to now assess the severity of his problem.
His possible injury will be of concern to Manchester United as well as Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal.
That is because the Red Devils are claimed to be eyeing up a possible swoop to bring him to Old Trafford in January.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is facing an uncertain future at the Theatre of Dreams after being deemed as surplus to requirements by Erik ten Hag.
It was claimed earlier this month how United would be prepared to allow the full-back to return to Crystal Palace in the New Year if a deal can be agreed.
Fellow right-back Diogo Dalot is in the final year of his contract and, while United have the option to trigger a 12-month extension, they are yet to exercise their clause.
And, according to Sky Germany, United are keeping close tabs on Frimpong with the player starring in the Bundesliga since swapping Scotland for the BayArena.
It has been said that Frimpong is aware of United’s interest in him after chipping in with five goals and three assists from 21 games in all competitions this term.
Frimpong has been described as a ‘very interesting’ option for United.
The report states how the Premier League giants are expected to hold talks to sign him following the World Cup ahead of a possible 2023 transfer.
But should Frimpong have suffered a serious injury, United could cool their interest in him.
